Design Build at Touch of Nature Environmental Center
When I began at SIUC in 2012 there were limited physical building components within the program. After discussing the idea with my woods construction professor in 2013 we began working to include a more comprehensive project into the sophomore curriculum. A partnership with a university owned subsidiary called Touch of Nature was formed and we began the process of looking for a site. We determined that replacing an existing structure in disrepair was the best option.
Work began on March 8th 2014 and concluded on July 17th.
The existing site was utilized as a meeting place for camp functions, and by local organizations such as Boy Scouts of America. The stage was undersized, seating capacity was inadequate, and views were blocked by a partially dead tree.
We completed removal of the benches and the stage by the end of demolition day one.
An approximate slope of 35° and high clay consistency made earth work difficult.
Tree removal.
Our workshop on site.
130 railroad ties being inventoried for condition and actual dimensions.
The first three terraces with gravel.
Bench connection prototype.
At this point we were nearing completion.
Complete seating prior to landscaping.
ADA compliant path to the stage.
Complete amphitheater.
